Mental Retardation-
To be considered mentally retarded, one must have an IQ of 70 or below. Children who are mentally retarded learn slower than their peers, having difficulty solving problems and have trouble communicating. It is more difficult for them to adapt to a classroom, make friends, and keeping up with school lessons. While they are able to learn in a normal classroom and try to care for themselves, those with more severe forms of mental retardation will need constant supervision. (2-3% of the U.S. population is mentally retarded.) While both biological and environmental factors can cause mental retardation, the most severe cases are genetic.

Giftedness-
Gifted children show above average achievement in these typical categories- language, math, art, music, and athletics. Some show talent all all areas, while others may only show talent on one or two. While IQ is a factor of giftedness, some talents (like art) cannot be expressed on an IQ test, and for some gifted children, their cultural context may affect their test score. Gifted children learn early continue on their own beat, usually not needing much assistance to excel.

Savant Syndrome-
While savants have serious mental of physical disabilities, they also have extraordinary talents. They have profound capacities that are far beyond normal, and while are not all around smart, know an exceptional amount of information on a specific topic. They are known to be deep yet narrow. Their skills are usually found in art, music, calendar calculation, and spacial skills. While around 50% of savants have autism, both autism and savant syndrome are different things.
